Days after we recorded our third episode of Hyperspace Theories, Lucasfilm released the first official teaser trailer for Star Wars: The Force Awakens. Although it’s only 88 seconds long with seven instances of visual imagery from Episode VII, it already generated a bunch of storytelling and speculation ideas for Tricia, B.J., and Kay.
We approach the teaser trailer scene by scene, focusing on the story implications of the visual cues provided in the imagery. We also consider who the narrator might be, both in the story and the voice; Kay correctly identified him as Andy Serkis. B.J. also mentioned the possibility that the rolling-ball droid might be female, later reported as a rumor by Devin Faraci at Badass Digest.
The important take away, though, is that speculating is fun and helps our minds consider storytelling. Don’t worry about being wrong; just have fun!
