Second Excerpt: Iko N’Kenis

Today’s excerpt features Iko N’Kenis, a secondary character who plays a pivotal role in the battle for the Kavil moon. A career military man, Iko finds that he must adapt quickly in a navy bogged down by protocol and bureaucracy after years of relative peace. Although the book is definitely Vespa’s story, there will be something for everyone and Iko is quickly turning into one of my favorites.

The next excerpt, which will be posted shortly before Comic-Con, will feature more Vespa; this time flying, shooting, and kicking alien butt.

  1. I found the banter hilarious. 😀 And here’s where the first battle of the war begins… Should be interesting. I wonder why they struck Kavil’s moon first? In order to ambush defenseless tourists of high rank, because it was easier to reach than Prime, or for some as-yet-unknowable-without-context reason… Interesting question, really… 🙂

Drat you, I want to read the book already, and it’s not even completed yet! >:( 😛

So, from the summary, Vespa will have a role in the defense of Kavil’s moon… That means she’ll be in an epic space battle, fighting a guerrilla war on the surface, or both. (Here, as in patents, “a/an” should be interpreted to mean “at least one”… :P) I wonder which?

I also wonder how her brother’s doing. All I know about his personality so far is that he “[did] what had been expected”, that “he hadn’t flinched”, and that he had taken the name Fireheart in a “firm, confident voice”, “a name that would open a thousand doors”. Sounds like he (presumably) shares a strong-willed personality with Vespa, albeit a less uncertain one, and that he’s somewhat more traditional and willing to take advantage of the position into which he was born than Vespa, who wants to make her own identity. I’m supposing he’ll be her foil? Lots of things that could happen to him at this point, really; he could get out fine and form a sister-brother team with Vespa, he could be seriously crippled by injuries sustained in the attack and be forced to reevaluate his perfectly-organized plan for his life, he could take up an entirely different role from her and engage in, say, politics in the background while she whirls through all the action (much like the Luke-Leia dynamic in the Bantam books, genderflipped), he could be captured by the alien invaders and tortured while being preached at by a fowl darksider… Okay, not so much the last one, but you get the idea. 🙂

Looking forward to seeing how this progresses!

Ah yes, that is the question, really, for most of the book.

I guess the excerpts did their job, then.

More on the brother to come. After Vespa and a few other characters are revealed. Yes, he is a foil of sorts, but not in the way that he falls under the influence of stupid fowl.
